Celebrating Progress, Planning the Future

As we reach the midpoint of the year, it is remarkable to reflect on everything the IPA has accomplished together. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, presenters, sponsors, and members, the first half of the year has been filled with meaningful educational programs, networking opportunities, and initiatives designed to support and advance the paralegal profession.

2026 NALA Utilization & Compensation Survey

If you worked as a paralegal in 2025, we invite you to participate in the 2026 NALA Utilization & Compensation Survey. The survey closes July 30, and your input is essential. At the end of the survey, you can share your email to receive a code for one free upcoming webinar, valid through 12-31-2026. Since 1986, NALA has conducted this survey every two years. Each response helps build a comprehensive picture of today’s paralegal profession while providing valuable benchmarking data for years to come.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete, and every response strengthens the results. Please share it with fellow paralegals who worked in 2025, as the more voices represented, the stronger and more accurate the report will be.

FREE 30-Day Trial of LawEngine (no credit card required)

Disclaimer: The Illinois Paralegal Association (IPA) is not sponsoring, endorsing, or recommending LawEngine and makes no representations or warranties regarding its suitability, accuracy, security, functionality, or compliance with applicable laws or regulations. Participation in the trial is entirely voluntary. Users are solely responsible for independently evaluating LawEngine and ensuring that any use complies with their employer's or organization's policies and procedures, confidentiality requirements, and all applicable laws, ethical obligations, and professional standards.

LawEngine is offering IPA Members a free 30-day trial.  Members should use a work email if possible. There is no automatic charge and no cancellation process needed to avoid being charged.

Check out this one-page Illinois brief for your reference, but the shortest way to evaluate LawEngine is to test it on real Illinois questions where source-linked support, accuracy, and thoroughness matter. These are good examples you can paste directly into LawEngine:

  1. “For a case in the Northern District of Illinois applying Illinois law, build a source-linked summary-judgment research checklist and what else I should consider or take into account. Separate 735 ILCS 5/2-1005, N.D. Ill. Local Rule 56.1, and any Illinois case-law research context. I’m giving this to a partner at a law firm who wants a brief memo of all this. Make it executive level format.”

What this tests: Illinois substantive law, federal procedure, local rule practice, and case-law context all in one answer, without mixing them together.

  2. “Before I send a deposition scheduling email in a Cook County civil case, pull Cook County Circuit Court Rule 3.2 and turn it into a do-not-schedule checklist. Keep it limited to Cook County and do not calculate a case-specific deadline. Give any other pointers or things I should take into account.”

What this tests: a practical local-rule workflow that can help before a routine scheduling email goes out.

  3. “Show the current text of 740 ILCS 14/20 and the Public Act provenance LawEngine can verify for recent amendments, including approved and effective dates where available. Keep the provenance separate from the current operative text and say plainly if any history cannot be confirmed.”

What this tests: current statutory text, amendment history, effective dates, and source-law provenance kept separate and checkable.

  4. “Is this a thing: whether the odor of cannabis alone gives police probable cause to search a vehicle changed after legalization? Pull the operative text - or a snippet and relevant part of texts that involve this – any codes, ILCS laws, or court cases - either appellate decisions or Supreme Court decisions. Did these codes, laws, or decisions change anything over time, and if so how did they change and when? I want the background of this fully explained.”

What this tests: time-aware Illinois legal research that can explain how statutes and cases moved over time instead of giving a one-line answer.

  5. “I have an Illinois expert-witness issue and keep seeing references to Daubert and Frye. Which standard does Illinois actually use, what source text should I start from, and what cases give the background?”

What this tests: avoiding a common federal/state mix-up and grounding the answer in the Illinois rule and Illinois authority.

  6. “Compare Illinois Rule of Evidence 403 and Federal Rule of Evidence 403 side by side. Pull each rule’s current text with source links, then tell me the words or listed grounds that differ.”

What this tests: exact text comparison where small wording differences matter.

  7. “Does the Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance require predictive-scheduling pay for hourly restaurant workers? Pull the Chicago source text, then explain how it fits alongside Illinois wage and day-of-rest laws without mixing city law and state law.”

What this tests: local and state law in the same research question, with the city and state layers kept distinct.

LawEngine is built to help Illinois legal professionals get to the right source-backed answer faster, with citations, source text, and limits they can inspect.
