Introducing Your New IPA President

Dear Members of the Illinois Paralegal Association,

I am thrilled and honored to introduce myself as the newly nominated President of the Illinois Paralegal Association (IPA). Having served on the IPA Board of Directors since April 2023, I am excited to take on this new role and lead our valued association.

As President, my primary goal for the next year is to continue promoting and advancing the paralegal profession in Illinois. I also aim to extend our outreach to paralegal students, providing them with valuable resources and networking opportunities. Additionally, I am committed to encouraging a welcoming community of support for all paralegals and creating meaningful opportunities for us to connect and grow together.

Case Closure Rates Get Longer as E-Discovery Increases

Federal defender offices are struggling with increasingly complex litigation marked by escalating electronic discovery demands. Staffing shortages and the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic have added to their challenges.

These factors have contributed to criminal cases taking a median of 10.4 months to close from filing to disposition in 2023, a 60 percent increase from just five years ago, when the median case closure time was 6.5 months in 2018, according to data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
