Our Story

Paving the Path for Illinois Paralegals Since 1972

During 1971, paralegals in the Chicago area began meeting informally to discuss developments related to the legal profession. Those conversations became the Chicago Association of Paralegal Assistants (CAPA) — and, as members joined from across the state, the Illinois Paralegal Association.

Informal Beginnings

Paralegals in the Chicago area begin meeting informally to discuss developments related to the legal profession.
November 1972
CAPA Is Founded

Bylaws are adopted and the first officers of the Chicago Association of Paralegal Assistants (CAPA) are elected.
September 28, 1973
Incorporated

CAPA is incorporated as an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, and is subsequently qualified as an exempt organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(6).
January 1976
Becoming the IPA

With members located throughout the state, CAPA amends its name to the Illinois Paralegal Association.
