the NFPA Annual Meeting on October 9-12, 2008, in Rogers, AR.
Debbie
Bryant, IPA's Pro Bono Chair, represented the IPA at the Pro Bono Conference
on May 10-11, 2008, in Minneapolis, MN.
Kathi
Heller, IPA's PACE Ambassador, represented the IPA at the PACE Ambassadors
Conference on May 17-18, 2008, in Indianapolis, IN.
IPA Board member Eric Baker attended the
NFPA Region II Meeting in Kansas City, KS, on April 12, 2008.
IPA Board member Rhonda Humphry attended
a Leadership Training Conference on May 4-5, 2007 in Atlanta, GA. Topics
discussed were 1) effective leadership and communication skills, 2) how
to have productive association meetings and 3) strategic planning. A guest
speaker from the Georgia State Bar gave a presentation on ethical considerations
for paralegals.
On
March 17, 2007, the IPA Board sent Eric Baker, IPA Director, to Dallas,
TX for an NFPA Regulation Conference. Regulation is becoming a big topic
in several states, and the Board wanted to know what is on the horizon
for NFPA and how these changes might affect Paralegals in the future here
in Illinois and around the U.S.

In April 2008, the IPA board of directors wrote
a letter
to paralegal employers regarding the differences in Paralegal Education.
In March 2006, the IPA Board of Directors wrote
a letter
to promote the utilization of paralegals amidst discussions regarding
overseas outsourcing of legal work in the media and paralegal community
and has sent this letter to a random selection of 300 Chicagoland public
companies.
In 2004, the
IPA's Board of Directors became aware of Illinois Senate Bill 2136, put
forth by Senator DeLeo. After reviewing the proposed legislation, the
Board of Directors prepared a policy
statement regarding SB2136, which was forwarded to Senator DeLeo,
as well as the members of the Rules Committee for the bill, and the Presidents
of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association.
At
times, the IPA Board of Directors may write a response to an article it
feels is inaccurate or inappropriate. The IPA Board of Directors submitted
a letter to the
editor of the National Paralegal Reporter in response to an
article written by Jim Barber that appeared in the October/November 2003
issue of the Reporter regarding the Department of Labor's reevaluation
of the exempt vs. non-exempt issue.
